Political and administrative structure
Divided into departments, which are divided into municipalities (Art. 224).
There are 333 municipalities as of 2008.
National parliament
El Congreso de la República de Guatemala es el órgano legislativo unicameral de Guatemala. Está conformado por 160 diputados electos democráticamente por sufragio universal.
Municipal government
Municipal governments are headed by a Municipal Council (Art. 33). The municipal executive branch is headed by a mayor (Art. 52), who presides the Municipal Council (Art. 53).
Municipalities are governed by a Council consisting of a mayor, district representatives and councilpersons. See Municipal Code of Guatemala - "Law 12-2002" (amended).
Duration of terms
Council members are elected directly, by universal and secret suffrage, for a renewable term of four years.

Majority for mayors, proportional for councilpersons.

Uninominal for mayors, plurinominal for councilpersons.

Electoral Justice
