Political and administrative structure

British overseas territory in the Caribbean. Its form of government is parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. The head of state is the British Monarchy, represented in the country by a governor general. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Governor General based on their position as leader of the majority party or coalition in an electoral process.

Montserrat is divided into three administrative regions called “parishes.”

National parliament

The Legislative Assembly of Montserrat is unicameral. The Legislative Assembly has 12 seats, of which 9 are occupied by members elected directly in a single constituency by absolute majority vote in two rounds. The other members are: the president, usually someone from outside the Assembly, elected indirectly by the members; and two ex officio members: the attorney general and the financial secretary.

Municipal government

There are no local government structures in Montserrat.
