Deaths of women caused by their partner or former partner

About this Indicator

The murder of women and girls by their partners or former partners represents one of the most extreme manifestations of gender-based violence. These killings are often the culmination of prior experiences of gender-based violence, which may include psychological, sexual, and physical abuse.

Definition
This indicator quantifies the annual number of women aged 15 and older who are murdered by their partner or former partner. It is expressed in absolute numbers and as a rate per 100,000 women (only for Latin American countries). The value "0" indicates that no female deaths at the hands of their partners or ex-partners were reported for the country in the corresponding year. The indicator is based on the annual request made by the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean to National Mechanisms for the Advancement of Women, which obtain this information from judicial institutions, national police, or other competent bodies in each country. Depending on the country, data is available from 2005 to the most recent year, with historical records updated as needed.
