Population outside the labour market
About this Indicator
The high burden of unpaid work throughout life limits women's economic autonomy and is directly related to their low labor market participation rate. Conversely, and as has been the case over the past 20 years, approximately one-third of women who do not participate in the labor market engage in unpaid domestic and care work as their primary activity. As a result, those who work primarily in unpaid family care see their chances of earning their own income, accessing economic resources, and social protection based on formal employment.
Definition
Proportion of the population aged 15 to 64 years who are outside the labor market and whose main activity is unpaid domestic and care work, relative to the total number of people aged 15 to 64 years who are outside the labor market. It is calculated by sex and the result is expressed as a percentage. The indicator is constructed based on household surveys from the countries in the Household Survey Data Bank (BADEHOG), between 2000 and the latest available year.
