Political and administrative structure
An independent nation, part of the Commonwealth of Nations. Its form of government is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. The head of State is exercised by the British Monarchy, represented in the country by a General Governor. The head of government is exercised by the Prime Minister, elected by the General Governor by virtue of their position as party or major coalition leader in an electoral process.
Saint Lucia is divided in ten districts.
National parliament
The Parliament of Saint Lucia is bicameral. The House of Assembly has 18 members, 17 of whom are directly elected by universal suffrage. The Senate has 11 members appointed by the governor general, six of whom are nominated by the prime minister, three by the leader of the opposition, and two directly by the governor general after consultation with religious, economic, and social groups.
Municipal government
Saint Lucia has 10 administrative districts, governed by 15 district councils, whose members are all appointed. Each council has between 9 and 15 members, including a mayor or council president.
