Political and administrative structure
British overseas territory in the Caribbean. Its form of government is parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. The head of State is the British monarchy, represented in the country by a governor general. The head of government is the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Governor General based on their position as leader of the majority party or coalition in an electoral process.
The British Virgin Islands are divided into five administrative districts.
National parliament
The Parliament of the British Virgin Islands (House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands) is unicameral. The House of Assembly has 15 seats, 13 of which are elected by universal suffrage by simple majority vote (9 in single-member constituencies and 4 general seats). In addition, there are 2 ex officio members: the Speaker of the House, usually an external figure, and the Attorney General.
