Indicators

The Gender Equality Observatory publishes a set of relevant indicators to monitor progress toward gender equality and the economic, physical, and decision-making autonomy of women and girls in all their diversity in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Observatory's indicators are constructed from official statistical information, both that which is publicly available on official websites and that which countries provide through specific requests.

Each indicator has its own definition, links to the CEPALSTAT database, where the information can be disaggregated according to different variables to delve deeper into the metadata and sources, and links to publications that provide further analysis.

Women councilors

About this Indicator

The participation of women in elected positions is essential to guarantee their influence in decision-making and constitutes a direct expression of their right to participate fully in political and public life on equal terms. In the case of municipal councils, the proportion of women elected as councilors (or regidoras) in Latin America and the Caribbean exceeded 30% for the first time in 2019.

Definition
It corresponds to the percentage of women elected as councilors (or regidoras) for a municipal government term. The result is expressed in percentages. The Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean collects this indicator from the annual report of the national statistical offices of the countries, who compile the information in coordination with electoral authorities based on the latest local election results or directly from the electoral bodies' websites of each country. Data is available from 1998 to the most recent year.
